STORY

The Telstar was the Mazda 626 sold under a Ford badge in Australia. The AR series arrived in May 1983 and replaced the rear-drive Cortina. It was essentially a second-generation, front-wheel-drive Mazda 626, and it was locally assembled. Telstars came from Japan and also from Ford's Broadmeadows plant near Melbourne. The last Australian cars were the AY series, dated to December 1996 by one source, while another says the car was sold locally until 1997. The TX5 was the hatchback version in the range. Japan and several Asian markets had their own Telstar lines.
