STORY

Ford built the first Windstar at its Oakville, Ontario plant in January 1994 and sold it as a 1995 model. The only engine at launch was a 3.8-liter V6 rated at 155 hp and 220 lb-ft, which took 9.7 seconds from 0 to 60 mph in a magazine test. Early vans had no sliding door on the driver's side; the complete redesign for the 1999 model year added one. For 1996 a 3.0-liter V6 with 150 hp became the standard engine and the 3.8 rose to 200 hp, and the 1998 model got a wider driver's door. The 2004 model year brought the Freestar name, and in January 2007 about 2,500 unsold vans were counted as Oakville moved on to the Edge and MKX.
