The first Monaro was a two-door coupe launched about six months after the rest of the HK range in 1968. The Monaro GTS 327 had an imported Chevrolet 327 V8 and a four-speed manual, and it won the 1968 Bathurst 500, Holden's first win in the race. The HT of 1969 replaced it with the GTS 350, and Holden Dealer Team HT GTS 350s won the 1969 Bathurst 500. The HG of July 1970 was the last of the original coupes; Bathurst duties then passed to the Torana GTR XU-1.
The Monaro returned for 2001 as a rear-drive coupe based on the Commodore, built at Elizabeth in South Australia. The CV6 had a supercharged 3.8 V6 with 171 kW, and the CV8 had a 5.7 LS1 V8. The VZ of September 2004 raised the V8 to 260 kW. The coupe was also sold as the Vauxhall Monaro in the UK, the Chevrolet Lumina Coupe in the Middle East and the Pontiac GTO in the United States. A CV8-Z farewell edition followed, and the last coupe was sold in February 2006.
