The Story

Why the Torana matters

The Torana was Holden's compact car from 1967 to 1980. The LC of October 1969 was the first Torana with a six-cylinder option, in 138, 161 and 161S form beside the 1.2 four-cylinder, and a 1.6 OHC four arrived in mid-1971. The GTR XU-1 of 1970 took Holden into Bathurst racing with a triple-carburettor 3.0-litre six. The LJ of February 1972 added a 3.3-litre six, and the LJ XU-1 had a 3.3-litre six rated at 190 bhp.

The LH of 1974 was longer and wider and was the first Torana with V8 engines, the 4.2 litre (253) and 5.0 litre (308). The SL/R 5000 with the 308 V8 had a top speed of 208 km/h according to Holden, and the L34 option on it was built in 263 examples from 1975.
