The Story

Why the Volt matters

The Holden Volt was the Chevrolet Volt rebadged for Australia and New Zealand; in Europe the same car was the Opel Ampera. It was a range-extended electric hatchback. An electric motor drove the front wheels, and a 1.4-litre petrol engine ran a generator once the battery was depleted. It cost A$59,990 plus on-road costs at launch and was sold through 49 Holden dealers. About 246 had been sold in Australia by April 2015, and 16 had been registered in New Zealand. Holden said the second-generation Volt would not be sold in Australia because it was left-hand drive only.

The Chevrolet Volt rebadged for Australia and New Zealand (the Opel Ampera in Europe). A range-extended electric hatchback: the front wheels are driven by an electric motor, and a 1.4-litre petrol engine runs a generator once the battery is depleted, for a combined range of about 600 km. Priced at A$59,990 on release, with deliveries from December 2012 through 49 Holden dealers; 246 were sold in Australia by mid-April 2015 and 16 registered in New Zealand. It was withdrawn because the second-generation Volt was not offered in right-hand drive.
