STORY

Honda announced the Ballade on 26 August 1980 and sold it from 27 August through its Verno dealers, a four-door notchback sedan that was the sibling of the second-generation Civic. In Britain British Leyland built it under licence as the Triumph Acclaim, and Honda marked its launch in October 1981 with a Ballade Special. A second generation, a sibling of the third-generation Civic sedan, was announced on 22 September 1983 and went on sale on 20 October; Rover sold its version as the Rover 200. In South Africa the name returned in early 2011 on the sedan that other markets knew as the City, and was dropped in November 2025.
