Civic 1500 CVCC Hondamatic Hatchback (US)

1st gen (SB) · 1975–1979FWD

Three-door hatchback from the first-generation Civic with the Hondamatic automatic, sold in the United States from 1975 to 1979. Its 1.5 L CVCC four-cylinder petrol engine drives the front wheels. It is the clutchless counterpart to the manual 1500 CVCC hatchback. Hondamatic was Honda's own two-range automatic, which made the small hatchback easier for drivers who did not want to shift.

STORY

The Honda Civic debuted in 1972 as a fuel-efficient subcompact and was pivotal to Honda's global expansion, notably with its low-emission CVCC engine that met U.S. Clean Air standards without a catalytic converter. It has grown across eleven generations from a subcompact into a compact car offered in hatchback, sedan, and coupe forms, and remains one of the best-selling nameplates in Honda's history.
