STORY

Honda announced the Concerto on 15 June 1988 and put the four-door sedan on sale on 16 June through its Clio dealers in Japan, with the four-wheel-drive sedan and a five-door following on 1 July. Honda's release noted that the five-door was developed jointly with Austin Rover from the outset. The Rover 200 launched in 1989 was built alongside the Concerto at Rover's Longbridge plant, and the later Rover 400 shared its core structure, with a rear glasshouse unique to Rover. Japanese production ended in 1992. A badge-engineered Rover 218 SLD with a Peugeot 1.8 diesel, the Concerto TD, was sold from 1994 to 1996.
