STORY

Honda announced the Z on 8 October 1998 and put it on sale the next day through its Primo dealers in Japan. The name came back 24 years after the first Z coupe left production in 1974. This kei car carried its 660 cc engine under the rear-seat floor on what Honda called the UM-4 platform, underfloor midship with four-wheel drive, which gave a 50:50 weight split. Every Z had 4WD and 15-inch tyres, with 52 PS from the naturally aspirated engine and 64 PS from the turbo. Honda planned 5,000 sales a month and explained the name as starting from zero and aiming at an ultimate small car. A Super Emotion special edition followed in June 2000, and production ended in 2002.
