Hyundai Genesis here means the rear-drive luxury sedan, not the separate Genesis Coupe. The first generation (BH) was named 2009 North American Car of the Year at the Detroit show on 11 January 2009, the first win for Hyundai. The second generation (DH) was previewed by the HCD-14 concept in Detroit in January 2013 and presented at the Grand Hyatt in Seoul in late November 2013, where Hyundai billed HTRAC all-wheel drive as a first for the car. On 4 November 2015 the company announced that Genesis would become a separate luxury brand, and the sedan later became the G80.
The Genesis began as Hyundai's rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan, launched in 2008 to move the brand upmarket with V6 and V8 power and premium features at competitive prices. Its success established the Genesis name, which Hyundai later spun off into a separate luxury marque. The original sedan became the Genesis G80 under the new brand.
