STORY

The Scoupe grew out of the SLC show car at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show, and regular production began in February 1990. It sat on Excel underpinnings and first used a Mitsubishi-sourced 1.5-litre four, until Hyundai's own Alpha engine arrived later. The US got the car for the 1991 model year at a base price of 8,495 dollars, and the turbocharged version made 115 bhp at 5,500 rpm. Production ended in 1995 after 242,441 cars, and the Tiburon took over in 1996.
