STORY

The Continental is Lincoln's best-known nameplate. It began with the personal-luxury original of 1939 and passed through many distinct eras. The 1961-1969 fourth generation is the best known. It introduced clean slab-sided styling and rear-hinged "suicide" doors on both sedans and convertibles, and it set the look of 1960s American luxury. After decades of intermittent use, Lincoln revived the name in 2017 for a front- or all-wheel-drive flagship sedan, then discontinued it again in 2020 as the market shifted to SUVs.
