Mazda sold the Laputa from 24 March 1999 as a rebadged Suzuki Kei, a kei hatchback that Suzuki had introduced on 7 October 1998; Mazda did not develop it. Mazda's launch release offered only turbo engines, a SOHC unit rated 60 PS at 6,000 rpm and a DOHC unit rated 64 PS at 6,500 rpm, through its Autozam dealers. The Laputa was discontinued in April 2006.
Suzuki Kei rebadge (1999-2006): a tall kei crossover-hatch, offered only with turbo engines at launch.
