STORY

The Bongo began in May 1966 as a low-floor van and truck with a water-cooled engine of about 800 cc mounted at the rear. The second generation arrived in September 1977 and became Mazda's main seller in Japan. The third, from September 1983, came alongside the long-wheelbase Bongo Brawny of June 1983 and later added four-wheel drive and automatic options, and from 1994 Mazda supplied it to Nissan as the Vanette. The Bongo Friendee minivan of 1995 offered the Auto Free Top, a power-lifting roof with a bed space inside. The fourth generation went on sale in June 1999 and Mazda ended its own Bongo production in 2020.
