The first Demio (DW, 1996 to 2002) was a tall, boxy mini-wagon with a 1.3-litre petrol four of roughly 63 to 83 hp and front-wheel drive. Its upright body made it unusually roomy for a small Mazda and helped the model sell strongly in Japan.

STORY

The Mazda2, known as the Demio in Japan, is a subcompact hatchback introduced in 1996. It has run through four generations, growing from the tall, practical first Demio (DW) to the Skyactiv-based DJ of 2014, which also underpinned the Toyota Yaris sedan in North America. It has long been one of Mazda's core global small cars.
