R-EV revives the rotary as an onboard generator: an 830cc single-rotor Wankel charges the battery that feeds the electric motor, giving about 170 hp and extended range. The electric-drive subcompact crossover keeps the freestyle rear doors.

STORY

The MX-30 is Mazda's first mass-production battery-electric vehicle, launched in 2020 as a compact crossover coupe. It is distinguished by rear-hinged 'freestyle' half-doors, cork cabin trim referencing Mazda's origins as a cork manufacturer, and a deliberately small battery chosen for lifecycle-emissions reasons. Mazda later added an R-EV variant using a compact Wankel rotary as an on-board range-extending generator, marking the rotary's return.
