STORY
The 220 (W187) was an important model: the first postwar Mercedes-Benz with an all-new engine, the 2.2-litre M180 overhead-cam inline-six. It was shown at the 1951 Frankfurt Motor Show together with the larger 300. It updated the 170 range, which dated from before the war, with more power, better performance and new styling that built the headlamps into the front wings. It was sold as a saloon, a two-door Coupé and the elegant Cabriolet A and Cabriolet B. The smooth six-cylinder engine later powered Mercedes passenger cars for many years. Production ran until 1955. The W187 helped Mercedes-Benz regain its place as a maker of refined upper-middle-class touring cars in the recovering postwar market.
