STORY
Introduced in 2014, the AMG GT was the second sports car AMG developed entirely in-house, after the SLS. The SLS was an exotic halo car with gullwing doors. The GT was a more focused and more attainable car aimed directly at the Porsche 911. It has a long nose and rear-wheel drive, with the engine behind the front axle for balance, and a lightweight aluminium structure.
The engine set the pattern for a generation of AMGs: the M178, a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. Its turbochargers sit in the "hot inside V" between the cylinder banks to respond faster, and it uses dry-sump lubrication. It launched as the GT and GT S, and the family quickly grew to include the track-focused GT R and a four-door variant.
A GT3 racing version arrived in 2015 and became one of the most successful customer GT cars in the world. This gave the road car a serious motorsport record.
