STORY

Introduced in 2014, the AMG GT was AMG's second wholly in-house sports car after the SLS. Where the SLS was an exotic gullwing halo, the GT was a focused, more attainable weapon aimed directly at the Porsche 911. Long-nosed and rear-driven, it placed its engine behind the front axle for balance and clothed a lightweight aluminium structure.

The engine set the template for a generation of AMGs: the M178, a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with its turbochargers sitting in the "hot inside V" between the cylinder banks to sharpen response, combined with dry-sump lubrication. It launched as GT and GT S, and quickly spread into a family including the track-honed GT R and a four-door variant.

A GT3 racing version arrived in 2015 and became one of the most successful customer GT cars in the world, giving the road car serious motorsport pedigree.
