STORY

The EQS is the electric S-Class in spirit, Mercedes-Benz's attempt to reinvent its flagship for the battery age. Launched in 2021, it was the first large premium electric limousine on the market. It is built on a dedicated EV platform rather than adapted from a combustion car, and careful aerodynamic work made it one of the most streamlined production cars ever made.

This efficiency gave a class-leading range, with real-world figures that beat even the official estimates. Inside, the optional MBUX Hyperscreen covers the whole dashboard with a curved sheet of glass and joins three displays into one surface. It showed where Mercedes believed the luxury interior was heading.

The EQS was positioned as the technology showcase of the EQ sub-brand and, in some markets, was priced below the petrol S-Class. It carried on the flagship's mission of showing the future first, now in the electric era.
