Mercedes sold the GL for six years before AMG got one. The GL 63 AMG was announced on 31 May 2012 and had its world premiere at the Moscow International Automobile Salon that August, and Mercedes said the move completed its all-wheel-drive AMG range alongside the ML 63 AMG and the G 63 and G 65. It used the hand-built 5.5-litre M157 V8 biturbo at 410 kW and 760 Nm with a seven-speed AMG Speedshift Plus and permanent all-wheel drive, and covered 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The market launch was set for November 2012, the month the car also made its North American debut at the Los Angeles show. The badge lasted until the facelift: the X166 shown in Los Angeles in November 2015 was renamed GLS, so the AMG version became the GLS 63 at 430 kW.
