STORY
The GLA arrived in 2014 as Mercedes-Benz's first subcompact SUV, built on the front-wheel-drive MFA architecture shared with the A-Class, B-Class and CLA. The original X156 was a low-slung, hatchback-like crossover, and its halo GLA 45 AMG turned the segment on its head with a 2.0-litre turbo four producing up to 381 hp. For the second-generation H247 of 2020 the car grew taller and more overtly SUV-shaped, adopting the MFA2 platform, MBUX infotainment and a broader AMG range spanning the GLA 35 and the 421 hp GLA 45 S 4MATIC+. Positioned as the entry point to the Mercedes SUV family, the GLA has been a global volume success, particularly in North America and Asia. It remains in production and continues alongside its electric EQA sibling.
