STORY
The GLS is the full-size, three-row flagship SUV of Mercedes-Benz, planned as 'the S-Class among SUVs.' It comes straight from the GL-Class (X164) launched in 2006. The GLS name was adopted in 2015 when the SUV names were realigned, and applied to the facelifted X166. The all-new second generation (X167) arrived in 2019 on the MHA platform. It grew in size and got air suspension, the E-Active Body Control chassis and an ultra-luxury Maybach version at the top of the range. Engines are turbocharged inline-sixes and V8s, with the AMG GLS 63 at the top, all with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. It is not a motorsport model, but the GLS holds Mercedes' position in the large luxury SUV segment, which is popular in North America, China and the Middle East. It remains in production after a 2023 update.
