STORY

The GLS is Mercedes-Benz's full-size, three-row flagship SUV, conceived as 'the S-Class among SUVs.' It traces directly to the GL-Class (X164) launched in 2006, with the GLS name adopted in 2015 as part of the brand's SUV naming realignment, applied to the facelifted X166. The all-new second generation (X167) arrived in 2019 on the MHA platform, growing in size and gaining air suspension, the E-Active Body Control chassis and a Maybach-badged ultra-luxury variant at the top of the range. Powertrains span turbocharged inline-sixes and V8s, with the AMG GLS 63 providing the performance halo, all paired with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Though not a motorsport product, the GLS anchors Mercedes' presence in the large-luxury-SUV segment favored in North America, China and the Middle East, and continues in production following a 2023 update.
