STORY
AMG had a CLK on track before anyone could buy one: a modified CLK 55 AMG served as the Formula 1 safety car from the 1997 season, and the road car topped the CLK range from August 1999 with the 5.4-litre M113 V8. It arrived in the year Mercedes-AMG GmbH was founded and DaimlerChrysler took 51 percent of the company, ending AMG's independence. The C209 CLK of 2002 kept the 55 badge, now at 270 kW, and in 2004 came the CLK DTM AMG, a run of 100 supercharged coupes built after Bernd Schneider took the 2003 DTM title in an AMG-Mercedes CLK. Geneva in 2006 brought the CLK 63 AMG with AMG's 6,208 cc M156 V8 at 354 kW, and the Black Series followed at the New York show in April 2007 at 373 kW. Coupe production ended in 2008 and the cabriolet in 2009, after which the E-Class Coupe took the slot.
