STORY
AMG reached the M-Class with the ML 55 AMG, built from 1999 on the Alabama-made W163 and powered by a 5.5-litre V8 with 255 kW (347 PS). The W164 M-Class was shown in Detroit in January 2005 and the ML 63 AMG followed at the Frankfurt show that September, reaching the market in the second quarter of 2006; it used the 6.2-litre M156 that AMG had designed itself, 375 kW (510 PS), with the Speedshift 7G-Tronic. For the W166 the engine changed again to the 5.5-litre M157 biturbo; that ML 63 AMG had its world premiere at the Los Angeles show in November 2011 with 386 kW (525 PS), or 410 kW (557 PS) with the AMG Performance package, and it introduced the Active Curve System roll stabilisation. It was the last AMG to carry the ML name: when the facelifted W166 was shown in New York in April 2015, the M-Class was renamed GLE.
