STORY
AMG had been building large-engined SLs on the R129 since September 1993, when the SL 60 AMG appeared with a 6.0-litre V8; the SL 70 AMG and the SL 73 AMG followed, the latter built from April 1999 to May 2001 around a 7,291 cc M120 V12 at 525 PS. A 5.4-litre SL 55 AMG ran alongside them from 1999 at 260 kW. The R230 SL 55 AMG was presented at Frankfurt in September 2001 and went into series production that December with a supercharged V8 at 476 PS, rising to 500 PS during the run and to 517 PS with the 2006 facelift; 21,575 were built. The SL 65 AMG of 2004 brought 1,000 Nm, and the SL 65 Black Series of 2008 had a fixed roof, 670 PS and a run of 350. On the R231 the SL 63 was introduced at the end of February 2012 at 537 PS.
