Mercedes revealed the car in December 2015 and put it on a stand for the first time at the Detroit show in January 2016. It was not a new roadster but the facelifted R172 SLK, renamed to show how much it shared with the C-Class. Its AMG version, the SLC 43, was, in Mercedes' words, the first V6 model from Affalterbach to carry the new nomenclature, and it took over from the SLK 55 AMG and that car's naturally aspirated V8: a 3.0-litre biturbo V6 with 270 kW and 520 Nm, raised to 287 kW for the 2019 model year, a nine-speed automatic, 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and a limited 250 km/h. Mercedes quoted 7.8 l/100 km on the NEDC cycle, 0.6 l less than the SLK 55. Sales began in spring 2016. A Final Edition shown at Geneva in March 2019 included the SLC 43, and the line closed after the 2020 model year.
