AMG's version of the R-Class began as the near-series Vision R 63 AMG, shown at the Frankfurt motor show between 15 and 25 September 2005 next to the ML 63 AMG, the first production Mercedes to carry AMG's new 6.2-litre M 156 V8. The production car followed on 9 February 2006, when Mercedes-AMG unveiled the R 63 AMG at the Chicago Auto Show with 375 kW, 630 Nm, permanent all-wheel drive split 40 to 60 front to rear and the AMG Speedshift 7G-Tronic gearbox; it was assembled with the rest of the R-Class at Vance, Alabama. Mercedes published no production figure. Build ran through 2006 and 2007 only, and when the reworked R-Class reached the New York show in April 2010 no AMG model came with it.
