The Story

Why the Sprinter matters

Production started at the Düsseldorf plant, and on 23 January 1995 the first 500 vans of the series, coded T 1 N inside the company, were driven out to the sales outlets; Mercedes counted it as the first van with disc brakes on all four wheels and ABS as standard, and in May it was voted Van of the Year 1995. A second assembly plant opened in Buenos Aires on 16 September 1996, and the van reached the United States at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville in March 2001, badged as a Freightliner. The second generation went to the press at the end of January 2006 and reached the market that spring, built at Düsseldorf, with Ludwigsfelde taking the chassis and pickup versions from 23 June 2006. The third was shown on 6 February 2018 in Duisburg, built at Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde, with a North American plant at Charleston from 2019.
