STORY

The Vario made its public debut at the International Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover between 21 and 29 September 1996, the same show at which the Actros truck range appeared. It was a restyled version of the series Mercedes had presented in Rome in March 1986, and Ludwigsfelde built it with the five-cylinder OM 602 and the four-cylinder OM 904 LA. Meeting Euro VI was not worth the investment at some 3,000 vehicles a year. The last Vario left Ludwigsfelde on 27 September 2013, after 90,743 had been built there, after which heavier Sprinters and lighter Ategos covered the segment.
