STORY
The 190 (W121) was part of the 'Ponton' generation, Mercedes-Benz's first monocoque passenger cars whose smooth, integrated fender styling gave the range its nickname. Introduced in 1956 as the entry-level four-cylinder sedan beneath the six-cylinder 220 models, the 190 offered accessible Mercedes quality with a 1.9-litre engine and the marque's characteristic solidity. It was updated to 190b form in 1959 and was joined by economical 190D diesel variants that helped build the brand's reputation for longevity. The Ponton established the modern three-box Mercedes sedan silhouette and the numeric naming tied to engine displacement that would endure for decades. Production ran to 1961, when the range was succeeded by the 'Fintail' W110, making the Ponton a beloved and increasingly collectible piece of Mercedes history.
