STORY
The X-Class was Mercedes-Benz's first and only pickup truck, revealed in 2017 as a bid to bring a three-pointed star to the booming premium mid-size ute segment. Rather than engineer a truck from scratch, Mercedes built it on the Nissan Navara (D23) platform through the Renault-Nissan alliance, assembling it at Nissan's plant in Barcelona, Spain. The launch X 220 d and X 250 d used Nissan's 2.3-litre four-cylinder diesels, while the flagship X 350 d 4MATIC received Mercedes' own 3.0-litre OM642 V6 turbodiesel with 258 hp, the only genuinely Mercedes powertrain in the range. Critics and buyers alike balked at paying a premium price for what was widely perceived as a rebadged Navara, and sales fell far short of expectations. Mercedes discontinued the X-Class in 2020 after barely three years and around 15,000 units, ending its short-lived pickup experiment.
