STORY

The Mercury Cougar appeared in 1967 as an upscale coupe on a longer wheelbase than the first-generation Ford Mustang it was based on. The XR-7 was among the early versions. Over the years the Cougar grew into a larger personal luxury car that shared the Ford Thunderbird platform. For 1999 to 2002 the name returned on a front-wheel-drive New Edge sport coupe built on the Ford Contour and Mondeo platform.
