STORY

Bruce Meyers built the first Manx, called Old Red, as a fibreglass monocoque. He then switched to a bolt-on fibreglass body fitted over a shortened Volkswagen Beetle floorpan, and about 5,280 kits were sold. This is the shape the world copied. In 1967 Meyers and Ted Mangels drove a Manx from La Paz to Tijuana in about 35 hours, beating the previous record, and the publicity brought a flood of orders.

The Manx 2 followed. Meyers tried to stop the imitations in court but failed to win a patent. He revived the company in 2000.
