STORY

The Carisma was Mitsubishi's mid-size car for Europe, built from 1995 at the NedCar plant in Born, Netherlands, which also made the Volvo S40 and V40 and shared its platform with them. It came as a hatchback and a sedan, on a 2550 mm wheelbase. In 1997 the 1.8 GDI brought direct petrol injection, rated at 125 PS (92 kW) in its European version. A facelift followed in 1999. The 1.8 GDI had a top speed of about 200 km/h, and Mitsubishi claimed the direct injection cut fuel use by 30 percent, a saving test drivers did not see in practice.
