STORY

Mitsubishi's i went on sale in Japan on 24 January 2006 as a kei car with an unusual layout: a 0.66-litre turbocharged, intercooled three-cylinder MIVEC engine sitting ahead of the rear axle, driving the rear wheels or all four through a four-speed automatic. It was rated 64 PS at 6,000 rpm and 9.6 kgm, on a 2,550 mm wheelbase, priced from 1,281,000 to 1,617,000 yen, with a sales target of 5,000 a month. It took the Good Design Grand Prix in the 2006 award year. Mitsubishi UK announced in February 2007 that sales would begin on 1 July with an initial 300 cars at 8,999 pounds, and the electric i-MiEV was announced as a production car in 2009.
