J50 · 1970–19984WDSUV

The J54 2.7 Diesel is the short-wheelbase soft-top Mitsubishi Jeep introduced in 1970, part of the J50 line that lasted until the 1998 end of production. Its 2.7-litre 4DR5 diesel followed the 2.2-litre KE31 diesel of the older models, and it kept the four-wheel-drive, rugged utility layout of the original Willys design.

STORY

Mitsubishi built the Willys Jeep under licence in Japan from 1953, and the licensed truck stayed in production long after the company launched its own Pajero in 1982. Later trucks used Mitsubishi diesels such as the 4DR5 four-cylinder. In June 1998 the company said it would stop making Jeeps, with the last one due in August, because they no longer met new environmental and safety standards. Over about 45 years Mitsubishi sold roughly 200,000 of them in Japan, many to the government.
