280ZX

S130 · 1979–1980RWDcoupe

North American market, model years 1979 and 1980. The 135 hp at 5500 rpm and 144 ft lb at 4400 rpm (195 Nm) are quoted to SAE NET, from Nissan USA's own history page for the 1980 car. Compression rose in three steps: 8.3 for MY1979, 8.6 for MY1980 and 8.8 from MY1981, the 8.6 figure coming from the owner's manual and so far supported by a single document. There was no American MY1978: in the United States the S130 arrived as a 1979 model, while the 1978 model year was seen out by the previous S30. Kerb weight is deliberately omitted because the American owner's manuals do not carry it at all, only gross vehicle weight. These figures are not comparable with the Japanese numbers quoted to JIS gross.

STORY

The 280ZX (S130) arrived in 1978 as a more refined, grand-touring evolution of the Z line, trading raw sportiness for comfort and luxury features. It offered 2.8-litre inline-six power, and a turbocharged version joined the range in 1981. Despite criticism that it had grown softer, it sold strongly, particularly in the United States.
