280ZX (P79)

S130 · 1981–1981RWDCoupe

North American market, model year 1981. 145 hp at 5200 rpm and 156 ft lb at 4000 rpm (212 Nm) to SAE NET, per Datsun USA brochure WE 11-80-144M-2. The rise from 132 hp came from the P79 head and flat-top pistons, which lifted compression from 8.3 to 8.8. Note that this engine change landed in MY1981, a year before the body facelift of MY1982, so the trim sits in the pre-facelift phase. Not comparable with the Japanese 155 PS quoted to JIS gross.

STORY

The 280ZX (S130) arrived in 1978 as a more refined, grand-touring evolution of the Z line, trading raw sportiness for comfort and luxury features. It offered 2.8-litre inline-six power, and a turbocharged version joined the range in 1981. Despite criticism that it had grown softer, it sold strongly, particularly in the United States.
