Japanese market. The 130 PS at 6000 rpm and 17.0 kgm at 4000 rpm are quoted to JIS GROSS, the Japanese standard in force until 1985; the American versions of the same car were certified to SAE net, and the two scales are not comparable. The two-litre engine existed for tax reasons: the S130 body fitted the compact car class, the class was defined by displacement alone, and the tax differed by more than double, 34,500 yen a year against 71,000.

STORY

The 280ZX (S130) arrived in 1978 as a more refined, grand-touring evolution of the Z line, trading raw sportiness for comfort and luxury features. It offered 2.8-litre inline-six power, and a turbocharged version joined the range in 1981. Despite criticism that it had grown softer, it sold strongly, particularly in the United States.
