STORY
Pickup was the name continental Europe used for the truck Japan bought as the Datsun Truck. The 720 arrived in October 1979 and gained the line's first four-wheel drive in June 1980; in June 1983 it became the first vehicle built at Nissan's new plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. The American label moved twice: federal fuel-economy listings name a Nissan Pickup for 1984 and a Nissan Truck from 1985. The D21 replaced the 720 at home in August 1985 and in North America for 1986, where it took a 2.4-litre four or a 3.0-litre V6 while Japan kept smaller petrol engines and an SD23 diesel; American owners called it the Hardbody, a name that reached the 1990 federal listing itself. Dutch records carry the same truck as Nissan Pickup from 1986 and as Pick Up King Cab from July 1987. The D21 ran to 1997, and Europe went on calling the D22 the Pick Up while other markets used Navara, Frontier and NP300.
