STORY
The Xterra was Nissan's affordable, tough sport utility, taking the Frontier pickup's ladder frame and its headlights, bonnet, A-pillars and front doors, built at Smyrna in Tennessee from 1999 as a 2000 model from $17,349 with a 170 hp 3.3-litre V6 or a 143 hp 2.4-litre four. At the Chicago show in February 2001 Nissan revealed the 2002 car, on sale that August with a 210 hp supercharged V6 shared with the Frontier S/C, which Nissan called the first compact SUV to get a factory-installed supercharged engine. Brazil built the same WD22 as the X-Terra from 2003 to 2008. The N50 of 2005 moved to a modified F-Alpha frame, designed for the Titan and Armada, with a 265 hp 4.0-litre V6. Production ended in 2015 after more than 750,000 sales by Nissan's count, and a return was confirmed in April 2026. The Middle Eastern X-Terra of 2020 is a different car again, a Navara-based Terra.
