Nissan announced the closed Fairlady Z in October 1969 and opened Japanese sales that November, sending it abroad under the Datsun badge as the 240Z; Japan has kept the Fairlady Z title ever since. The current car, code RZ34, was previewed as the Z Proto on 16 September 2020, premiered in New York on 17 August 2021 and went on sale in Japan in the summer of 2022 after Nissan published prices from 5,241,500 yen on 25 April 2022. Power comes from the 3.0-litre VR30DDTT twin-turbo V6 with 298 kW (405 PS) and 475 Nm, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic, and assembly is at the Tochigi plant. The Nismo grade, added for the 2024 model year, raises output to 420 hp and 384 lb-ft; it arrived as an automatic only, and Nissan announced a six-speed manual version for Japan in August 2026.
The current Nissan Z replaced the naturally aspirated engine with a 405 PS twin-turbo V6, and its styling keeps features of both the S30 and the Z32. A six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive are available, and the top Nismo version makes 426 PS.
