STORY
The Toronado, launched for 1966, was the first front-wheel-drive American car built since the Cord of the late 1930s. It paired a 425 cu in (7.0 L) Rocket V8 with a Turbo-Hydramatic transmission mounted beside the engine and linked to the front wheels by a chain. Motor Trend named it Car of the Year for 1966. The second generation of 1971-1978 kept the 455 cu in V8 and the car was downsized for 1979, with a fourth generation in 1986-1992.
