The Opel Diplomat arrived in 1964 as the top model of the Kapitan, Admiral and Diplomat range, with Chevrolet-origin V8 engines. The first Diplomat also had a Karmann-bodied coupe. The Diplomat B of 1969 used a De Dion rear axle, which Auto Bild credits with road holding that was rare for its time, and its 5.4-litre V8 (327 cu in, 5,354 cc) was rated at 230 PS (169 kW). Production of the series ended in 1977 after 13 years on sale since 1964.
