STORY

The Kadett was Opel's compact car: the first generation appeared before the war, and from 1962 it returned as the mainstay of the range and became one of the best-selling small cars in Europe. Successive generations moved from rear-wheel drive to a modern front-wheel-drive layout, and the sporty versions won the name a keen following. In 1991 the Astra replaced the Kadett, though in Britain the Kadett D and E had been sold as the Vauxhall Astra.
