STORY

The first Olympia was shown at the Berlin motor show in 1935, and series production began that April. Its self-supporting all-steel body made it the first German car built that way in large series. The 1.3-litre engine initially gave 18 kW (24 PS), the car weighed 835 kg, 135 kg less than the model before, and it cost from 2,500 Reichsmark. In 1936 an Olympia, the 500,000th Opel, was flown to Rio de Janeiro aboard the Hindenburg airship. A 1.5-litre overhead-valve engine with 37 PS arrived in 1937. After the war the Olympia was the car with which Opel restarted production in 1947, and later Opel models carried the name until 1970.
