Panoz Auto Development was founded near Atlanta by Dan Panoz, son of Don Panoz, in the late 1980s, and the Roadster was its first car. The original Roadster was built from 1992 to 1995 with a 5.0-litre V8. Around 1996 it was re-engineered as the AIV Roadster, with a 4.6-litre V8 making 305 PS. Panoz says it was the first aluminium-intensive vehicle from a US maker. The Esperante coupe followed in 2000.
