STORY

The 403 appeared in 1955 as the first Peugeot styled by Pininfarina, a partnership that began with contacts in 1951. Its 1,468 cc petrol four made 58 hp (43 kW) at launch. A 1.8-litre diesel of 48 hp was added in 1958, and the range took in a saloon, an estate and a cabriolet. The 404, also styled by Pininfarina, arrived in 1960 and the 403 stayed on sale until 1966, with 1,214,121 produced, commercial versions included, the first Peugeot to pass one million sales.
